History

The Seminole peopleĀ initially made Fort Myers their base due to the location on the Caloosahatchee River. The river gave the Seminoles the ability to see through all of the Atlantic waterways, allowing them to see the enemy before the enemy saw them. Cattle ranchers found Fort Myers to be suitable locations for their homesteads after the war was over allowing the new settlers to trade with both union soldiers and the Seminole people.

Fort Myers welcomed its first permanent resident in 1866 although the city was not officially incorporated until 1885. The first resident, Manuel Gonzalez, started the first trading post in the city, trading merchandise like tobacco, gunpowder and beads as well as various hides.

It was not until 1881 when a wealthy industrialist from Philly began to dredge the everglades, making a throughway where steamboats could run from the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Okeechobee. This made the town a landmark and in 1885 all 349 residents voted to have their town incorporated.
